further. i have had people saying what are they doing at boeing? are they working with the ntsb? a lot of it is centered around the everett factory, where the dreamliner is built they are out there doing tests, working in teams. i'm told it's hundreds of employees working on this 787 problem. they're not in one central location, but spread out throughout the boeing facility. boeing is tapping a number of areas for expertise. as for the ceo, he is involved frequently in the updates going on within the company. he's taking part in daily meetings on the latest findings. this is the biggest test of his ten year and ceo of boeing. what are we seeing in terms of the investigations involving government agencies? investigators are talking with suppliers, some in japan, some in arizona and england. there are suppliers around the world. the jtsb and ntsb are pursuing two different theories. as you look at shares of boeing which are under pressure, the jtsb says the ana plane did receive an overcharge, the battery. the ntsb in boston says, no, that didn't happen. there was not an overcharge invol

. clearly that's not happening today. with regard to the incident yet. ntsb tells me they expect to have an update on that investigation later today. we were talking with airlines earlier today and they said, listen, dreamliner flights have continued as scheduled. we know there's an issue with the one that was just about to take off from boston. take a look at the number of issues we've seen with the dreamliner over the last month of remember, it was just at the beginning of november that united did the first domestic flight for the dreamliner. highly regarded flight, got a lot of attention. a month later an emergency landing in new orleans after reporting mechanical problems. a few days after that, cutr air had to ground 787 jets due to what they say was a faulty generator. united grounding four due to an electrical planl panel and a fire in boston. there's a lot of headline risk right now. >> they have confirmed it is a 787. i don't know if we still have that live shot available but let's put it up while we talk about this. there you go, logan airport. what do they have to do? they hav
in question. for the latest on this ntsb request, let's go to dan springer. have they np >> no, they haven't. they have done the first level of investigation haven't been able to pinpoint the exact problems so going to a deeper level. as mentioned is not hurting the bottom line yet. just mentioned the company took in $81.7 billion in revenue, that is a record last year. it is not hurting the bottom line yet. the battery issues with the 787 did not sneak up on boeing but more details. replacing 10 of the lithium-ion batteries since may. half of them were due to low voltage. it is much higher as reported by source. reporting 100 batteries had to be replaced but not all of them suffered a failure. melissa: not confirm the number for me, but downplayed the whole issue saying batteries are replaceable unit on airplanes in the replace five or six per day. the company issued a statement saying we have not seen 787 battery replacements occurring as a result of a safety concern. the batteries are being returned because of our robust protection scheme shows no battery deeply discharged or improperly
to get to it on boeing. phil, over to you. >> we've heard from the ntsb, expecting an update from them. they have at least an initial report regarding the fire investigation of that 77 dreamliner in boston yesterday. the ntsb saying that they have decided they are going to send two more investigators to look at the dreamliner in question and that at least initially taking a look at the fire in question they found severe fire damage to the battery of the auxiliary power unit. remember, the auxiliary power unit is what is used to provide power to an airplane when it is parked on the tarmac, not while it's in flight so the battery unit, severe fire kagge there, and it's pretty clear, scott and maria, that we are going to see more airlines, if they haven't already, they are going to start checking their wiring on the battery unit. i just spoke with the folks out of ana in japan. they have a number of dreamliners, checked theirs overnight at the urging of the ministry of transportation in j.i just talked with united airlines. it has checked the battery power wiring on all of its dreamliners
investigation. jtsb within counterpart to ntsb out of japan, now says the battery involved in an incident over there was not overcharged. that's a reversal for them. meanwhile, ntsb is testing the lithium ion battery cells in washington, d.c. investigators are running multiple test at multiple locations. some at boeing in seattle, some at washington. they not continuing to peel back the onion looking for more, in terms of what is the cause between the dreamliner incidence. also in washington, there is discussion that u.s. senate is considering hearings to address the history of the 787 dreamliner. the t is in the discussion phase. the house of representatives, says it has no plans to hold hearings regarding the 787 and lij yom ion batteries. you mentioned shares of boeing moving higher. we want to show you eaton, interday. investigators in the uk are looking at fuel involves manufactured by eaton in the 787. there is discussion about what is causing fuel leaks with the graem liner. er with monitoring secretary lahood's speech in washington. he says anything regarding the dreamliner, we will br
're investigating it, along with somebody from boeing, the faa, ntsb, they're sending investigators to japan. and now what we have in japan are the two main carriers there, the first carrier is really to take a large number of dreamliners, they've grounded their fleets, at least for today and tomorrow. al nippon as well as japan airlines. 24 dreamliners. that's roughly half of the 50 that we've seen delivered so far by boeing. no flights again today, or tomorrow. here's what the focus is ultimately zeroing in on for the ntsb and faa. remember japan airlines flight that had the fire in boston last week? this is a battery unit from it. look how charred it is. that's along with what happened in japan on this emergency landing, that's going to be the focus for investigators as they take a look at what's going on with the lithium ion batteries. who makes these batteries? a firm out of japan. if you look at shares of that company, it's under pressure, understandably today. the firm has said they will cooperate with the investigation. and what you have now, carl, is a situat whe do a manufacturing

in the news, a lot of people saying are there others out there. the ntsb yesterday gave an update in terms of where the investigation stands, including showing the media what's going on in the ntsb lab, seeing the charred batteries from the 787 dreamliner that was the one that had to be put out in boston. well, now they still say they do not know the exact cause of the batteries catching fire. as for those batteries and one other component, the charger, the charger for the batteries built by a company called secureaplane, a plant out in tucson, arizona. back in 2006, there was a fire involving lithium ion batteries for the 787 at the secureaplane plant. a worker there warned the company about the batteries and the chargers and the possibility of fires. >> these lithium ion batteries, too much heat and they'll explode. it will be a nightmare. >> michael leon was dismissed from the company for repeated problems on the job. secureaplane told me yesterday the battery charger for the dreamliner was successfully tested. there was a fire in the facility in 2006 during one test. however, the curre

of tucson today conduct a test on the battery chargers. over the weekend, the ntsb released a statement saying the battery had not been overcharged. when you look at the picture of it, you can tell clearly that it was overheated. investigators will be there doing a number of tests to see if it was working properly. remember, in our boston fire, it was the backup battery that overheated and started a fire. the battery that overheated was near the front of the plane on a japanese flight. dagen: dan, it also seems that japanese and u.s. authorities have a different task when it comes to investigating these problems. they are going in different direction so they can cover all of the bases. they were made in japan by a company. a boeing source tells me the serial numbers of the two batteries that overheated are close together. that initial thought was it was a bad batch of batteries. that would be a good thing. that now appears less likely. investigators have not found any anonymously's. the investigation is focusing on the entire electrical system and how those lithium batteries factor in.
in what we understand. the ntsb and boeing, a technical team from boeing, they're investigating the fire on the dreamliner. it was found in a compartment with batteries, and electrical components. it's not entirely clear at this point exactly what caused the fire. it is believed that it might have been caused by one of the lithium batteries on the dreamliner. that is an issue, because the dreamliner uses lithium im batteries to power onboard electronics. way back in 2007 the faa issued special rules for the use of lithium im batteries because of the concern of flammability risk involving those batteries. this is the fourth dreamliner incident involving its electronics, or losing power, since december 4th. look at this timeline. back on november 4th, united took its first domestic 787 flight, at the time there had been no reports. a month later, a united flight going to niewark to houston, experienced mechanical problems, reporting a loss of power. cutter airways a few days later had to ground one of its 787 jets for what it said was a faulty generator. the 14th of december, united ground
's going to make a lot of people nervous. the ntsb is now investigating the 787 on the tarmac at logan airport yesterday morning, catching fire, after the plane had landed. the crew and the passengers had all deported. the fire was found in a compartment with batteries and electrical components. and again the passengers and crew were not on board during the fire. but this is the fourth incident since november or since december 4th where we've had a problem with the dreamliner. now remember united had its first domestic 787 flight back on november 4th. just a month later united had a flight from houston to newark, it made an emergency landing in new orleans. after experiencing mechanical problems, a loss of power. qatar air on december 9th said it grounded one of its 737 -- or 787s because of a faulty generator. similar problem, loss of power in flight. and then on december 14th, united grounds two of its four dreamliners due to problems with an electrical panel and then finally, yesterday you have the emergency crews responding to a 787 fire at logan airport. now the dreamliner, and th
in the united states, the ntsb continues to look at the japan airline 787 battery, but in reverse of what we're seeing in japan, they say this battery was not overcharged. the investigators are in arizona today visiting the battery charger manufacturer. that is a company called secure a plane. it's a subsidiary of mega plc out of the uk. over the last couple of days, that's seen a little bit of pressure as well. what we're seeing is an investigation where they haven't been able to square up what happened in japan with what happened in boston, so as a result, they're going to start diving further into the components that go into the dreamliner, and are connected and work with the battery to see if they can find out exactly what went wrong. and then from there, they might have a better sense of how to correct the situation. guys, back to you. >> now, phil, because these two regulatory agencies on opposite sides of the ocean are seeing different things in their investigation. does that tell you that the investigation may be much longer than anticipated? >> well, yeah, it would be different if o
the faa. we're waiting to see the results of the ntsb investigation to make a decision about what it all means. so frankly, we're saying to investors is, look, we can't say with any conviction level that there's a certain entry point where we want to jump in here and buy. what we want is more data. if you own boeing shares here, i think you hang on. i think the long-term outcome of this is that they will sort through the problems. you can see airbus this morning expressing confidence that they think boeing, their competitor will sort through the problems. but right now, you know, you're dealing with emotion and you're dealing with news flow, which is very hard for investors to forecast. >> there but for the grace of god for airbus. they're not going to crash airbus. >> look the safety of all things for airplane manufacturers, the one thing they can all agree within, the one thing they share data on, the one thing they're all committed to is safety. >> if it leaks out of the battery and has a weird smell, it's not a fire. >> yeah, that's really the important thing about what happened yest

said, the fire at logan is a unique example and the ntsb is investigating but i think trying to connect this event to other events is pure speculation at this point. we don't have a lot of data. >> have you seen any sign that production might be interrupted, slowed down if, in fact, they have to address the things along the production line? >> none whatsoever. >> because as the journal points out today, you get paid upon delivery and worst-case scenario would begin to avoid cash flow if they were delayed. >> yeah. look, the central bull thesis for boeing shares is about the large amount of cash the company will generate over three or four rates and with the 787 ramping up to very high levels to meet customer demand. if we were to call in to question that cash flow, that weighs against the bull thesis. we don't have any data to suggest that will happen. the planes are still flying and i would say these sorts of teething problems are normal for new planes. we have them on the a-380 and we have to wait and see and we need more data and not calling in to question the long-term fundamentals.
